Christine Sun Kim
New York- and Berlin-based artist Christine Sun Kim uses the medium of sound through technology, performance, and drawing to investigate and rationalise her relationship with sound and spoken languages. Selected group exhibitions and performances include: Sound Live Tokyo, Tokyo; nyMusikk, Oslo; Southern Exposure, San Francisco; Recess Activities, New York; Calder Foundation, New York; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She has released a set of 7inch vinyl records Panning Fanning, and was a recipient of Youth Insights Artist Residency at Whitney Museum, Residency at Southern Exposure, and Fellowship at TED.
As part of Echo, Kim will play “Fingertip Quartet” a work which consists of four sound files she personally created using audio recorder, laptop, and transducers. During the performance she will communicate the concept behind each sound by typing in large projected text on the wall behind her for the audience to read and experience. As part of her practice she is persistently questioning what she calls “the ownership of sound” and re-orienting the parameters, social values and sets of rules based around that which is omnipresent and yet invisible to us all.
Daisuke Ishida
Daisuke Ishida is a Berlin based artist, working with sound and contemporary media. He is interested in the consequence of artistic praxis and theory in sound, space and perception. His multidisciplinary research interest encloses areas such as acoustics, architecture, auditory perception, computer music and other related fields.
Since 2012, he is teaching at The Berlin University of the Arts, UNI.K Studio für Klangkunst und Klangforschung (Studio for Sound Art and Sound Research) and the master’s course Sound Studies. He established AUSREIHE, an independent organization committed to experimental electronic/computer music since 2009. Together with Ken Furudate, Kazuhiro Jo and Mizuki Noguchi, he founded The SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA in 2002, which received Honorary Mention in Digital Music category of the Prix ARS Electronica 2004 and Stiftung Niedersachsen work stipends for Media Art 2009 at Edith Russ Site for Media Art.
Daisuke Ishida has presented his artistic activities internationally such as Ars Electronica (Austria), Arsenals of the Latvian National Museum of Art (Latvia), deaf – Dutch Electronic Art Festival (The Netherlands), Edith Russ Site for Media Art (Germany), ICC – InterCommunication Center (Japan), Interferenze New Arts Festival (Italy), International Triennale of Contemporary Art Yokohama (Japan), ISEA – Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts (USA), MART – Museum of Art, Rovereto and Trento (Italy), MOT – Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Japan), Singuhr Hoergalerie (Germany), SMT – Sendai Mediatheque (Japan), Steim (The Netherlands), Transmediale (Germany) and YCAM – Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (Japan).
Yutaka Makino
Yutaka Makino was born in Tochigi, Japan in 1976. He studied Earth sciences, computer music and visual arts in Japan, Europe and the USA. He lives and works in Berlin.
On the basis of research into areas such as phenomenology, experimental psychology, psycho/acoustics, social sciences and system theory, Makino probes the processes of perception in experimental setups. His performances and installations provide visually and acoustically conditioned environments that make different modes of perception tangible to the perceivers and provoke reflection on the acts of perception.
Makino has recently shown in institutions and festivals such as Akademie der Künste Berlin, MärzMusik, Kontraste Krems, daadgalerie, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Transmediale, ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe, Sonic Acts, STRP Festival, Japan Society, etc. He has received prizes, grants and residencies from the DAAD’s Artists-in-Berlin Program, Villa Aurora Los Angeles, Prix Ton Bruynèl, Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs, Pola Art Foundation among others.
